January 19, 2022

Educational Topic:
Stock Selling for Long Term Investors

Stock presentation:

Darling Ingredients, Inc. (DAR)
This education segment will help us understand why selling is sometimes difficult for the long-term investor by first identifying some barriers that they face. Strategies to overcome these barriers, as well as criteria to consider, will then be offered. Finally, some BetterInvesting tools that can be used to help us become better stock sellers will be shared. Come join us to learn more about how to be a better stock seller.
Starting off the new year is a stock presentation by Betsy Wills, President of the Rocky Mountain Chapter.  Our stock to study is Darling Ingredients, Inc. (DAR).

Global population is increasing by tens of thousands every day, and the pressure on our planet's resources for food, feed and fuel is greater than ever. Our future - and that of our children - depends on our ability to find economically and ecologically viable ways to provide for a growing population's basic needs.

Darling Ingredients contributes to that goal by creating sustainable food, feed and fuel ingredient solutions.  DAR takes the meat by-products from our animal-based diets, and process them to reclaim valuable and essential bio-nutrients, fats, oils, proteins, meals and more that are used daily in personal, commercial, and industrial products. DAR's natural and sustainable ingredients are marketed internationally to the pharmaceutical, food, animal feed, pet food, biofuel, fertilizer, sports nutrition and cosmetic industries.

The club meeting begins at 6:45 pm Mountain Time, with about 15 minutes for the business portion of the model club, followed by presentations and discussion of companies.

Join us to learn more about running an investment club, selecting small and mid-sized companies and managing a portfolio.

The Rocky Mountain Chapter model club is focused on small and mid-sized companies as defined by BetterInvesting.  Often hard to find and evaluate, these potential gems have annual revenues of less than $10 Billion. In addition to a stock presentation, there will be a ten to fifteen minute education session during the meeting.

Evaluate Stocks
The Investment Club Way
January 22, 2022

(Core Class I)
This class offered on-line through Colorado Free University
9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Prerequisite: Introduction to Investment Basics or equivalent

This full-day workshop introduces the beginning investor to the tool used by investment clubs - the Stock Selection Guide (SSG).  The SSG is used to determine whether a company is a good, quality company that is trading at a reasonable price. The sessions cover selecting the best companies, determining a fair price, estimating future growth and the risks and total return to be expected for a company.  The final session will be an opportunity to practice using the principles learned to complete an SSG.  Introduction to Investing is highly recommended prior to this class, but is not required.
The sessions are:

  •     Selecting the Best Companies - Learn to recognize high-quality growth stocks using the Stock Selection Guide.
  •     Determining a Fair Price - Continue the examination of the Stock Selection Guide to determine the potential return of a stock.
  •     Estimating Future Growth - This session provides guidance on how to make reasonable, conservative projections of future sales and earnings growth rates
  •     Estimating Future P/Es - This session provides guidelines to help you make reasonable projections for future high and low P/Es and determine if the stock is a buy, sell, or hold.
  •     Practice Session - Practice what you have learned. Using current information, this interactive practice session will reinforce the principles provided in the day's sessions.

Whether you use Toolkit, the on-line Core SSG, or the on-line SSG Plus, you will gain a better understanding of how the Stock Selection Guide helps you determine whether the company is a quality company trading at a fair price.

Analyzing an Annual Report the Easy Way  (Beginner and above)

If you find the information in the Annual Report daunting, this class is for you.  Only minutes are required for the entire analysis.
First—what to read, what’s important, and what’s not.
Second—how to analyze all those financial numbers.
A computerized tool (spreadsheet), available at no cost, quickly guides you to useful conclusions.  The tool is built in sections, allowing a simple and quick data analysis, through more complex graphic levels, depending on your interest and investment skill level. Start with a simple analysis and learn as you explore more and more information about a company.

Evaluating Mutual Funds and ETFs

February 2, 2022
March 30, 2022
Offered on-line through Colorado Free University

6:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Do you want to increase your knowledge of Mutual Funds and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs)?  Do you think additional knowledge about these investments will improve your personal or deferred retirement account portfolio?  Have you wondered how you could compare different funds to determine the best “fit” for your portfolio?  Do you know where to find pertinent information about these funds?  If these are questions are in the back of your mind, we invite you to attend this class.

The two experienced instructors will expand your knowledge and guide you to reference material that will assist you in selecting the appropriate mutual funds and ETFs to suit your own portfolio.  You will learn how to evaluate these funds and, with continued practice, you will be capable of identifying the funds which will increase the value of your portfolios.  Investing is a life-time venture, and this class will provide a basic foundation to enable you to initiate or improve your knowledge of both mutual funds & ETFs.
